Your Favorite Pair of Jeans

What does wellness even mean? ‘Well Webster’s definition is, “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal.” Sounds so simple, right? There is no special recipe or diet (despite what all the greatest gimmicks claim). I consider “wellness” to be the journey to what make you feel alive and whole. This journey may not always be easy but always worth it. Starting off 2019 with an intention is important. Let’s try to fit it into your body like your favorite pair of jeans.

Personal Wellness Journey

My journey has been more like a the game of hungry, hungry hippos. Every time I think I have it in control, another hippo comes out.  Between keeping my diet healthy and balanced, maintain my relationships with friends and family, being my best professional self at my school, and finally balancing my mental and physical health. I was feeling completely depleted.

Long, Winding Road

I felt like it was just had to accept that I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)  and that I was just going to have food discomfort. Over 35 million Americans live with it every year.  I could live like this, I could just eat the same basic foods to keep myself “full” but never have that food enjoyment. I knew in my heart this was not meant to be my calling, but what could I do?

Wellness Redefined

Then I discovered the gift of wellness intention. By this I mean, be conscious  steps to improve my health in small steps. The key is small steps. I feel like we can do anything in small increments. Whether it is 5 minutes of meditation in the morning, or choosing to a handful of grapes as my nightly snack fix instead of chips.

Just Takes One Gift

Years ago I was given a massage treatment as a gift. I could count on one hand the amount of times, I had actually had a true relaxing spa experience. I thought of it as a  “luxury.” After leaving I knew this would become a regular stop on my wellness journey.

My Health, my Wealth

But I noticed something funny about my health. It wasn’t all about my food or fitness choices. Sometimes I felt symptoms during my period, work stress, even bad dates (*shakes head*). My mental and self-care was a major part of journey. Why wasn’t I putting as much effort into it? I just need to tell myself not to stress or just “stay away from the drama.” But that’s not life! Things happen, the more tools I can learn and implement in my life the better.

Here’s to more small steps in 2019! I can’t wait to share more  of wellness vibe with you.
